A "class action" is a civil suit under which a party, or a group of parties, may sue as representatives for a larger class of people. For example, if a large number of people are electrocuted or burned as a result of an allegedly defective toaster made by ABC Company, the principal issue will be whether the toaster caused the injuries. The fact that these people all owned the toaster by the same company puts them in a similar situation or "class."
The main advantage of a class action is that it effectively brings together small claims that would be impractical to litigate individually. By aggregating small claims, class actions lower the cost of litigation, while at the same time strengthening the cases of people who might otherwise have little power to fight large corporations.

To proceed, the federal court must permit the class action lawsuit. For that to happen, certain requirements must be met. For example, the class must be so large or dispersed that actually bringing together all individuals in a suit would be impractical; there must be questions of law and fact common to all members that outweigh any individual questions; and the named parties must adequately represent the interests of their class. Certain forms of notice to members of the class, e.g., by newspaper or broadcast publication or by mail, are also required. In most types of suit, all members of the class are bound by the decision, unless a member of the class opted out of the action at the beginning of the lawsuit.

If the class action is certified, members of the class must be given a notice, and an opportunity to exclude themselves from the class action. A certified class action strengthens the plaintiff’s negotiating position. Only the class members who ask to be excluded are not bound by the judgment in the case.
Some examples of class actions are those that s are those brought against the manufacturers of defective or dangerous products – the arthritis drug Vioxx, which was pulled off the market in fall 2004; the diet drug Fen-Phen; and Serzone, used to treat depression.

There is strength in numbers. A class action lawsuit is a powerful tool that individuals can use to enforce the law against large corporate firms and government entities.
